We have always had a great affinity for top pedigree dogs. Growing up in the Virgin Islands made this quest somewhat of a challenge due in part to our geographic location. Breeds we became familiar with through ownership were the Kuvasz, Rottweiler, German Shepherd and the Shiloh Shepherd. Over the course of many years and owning dogs from top breeders we developed a special attachment towards the German Shepherd. Some have stated and we agree that the German Shepherd is the most utilitarian of all the breeds.
Our first introduction into the German Shepherd breed was through a family friend who bred casually at his home. This dog was well loved but in retrospect he was not the best representative of the breed. The second German Shepherd we owned was a better representative of the breed and she too came from another breeder on the island that bred at their home. She was fearless with natural guarding instincts and took to training very well. At this juncture we were looking for a better pedigree within the breed and decided we would go with a German imported Shepherd. We contacted a local professional who had their own kennels and shared our desires and concerns. It wasn’t long before we had a 6 month old German imported Shepherd puppy in our possession.
Top notch was some of the descriptive words used with this dog. She was majestic to the eye with the classic imported slant back, a joy to train and a welcome addition to our family. We were convinced that we had reached the peak as far as pedigree was concerned with the German Shepherd breed. How can we possible top such excellence and to mention she came directly from Germany. The questions continued and the big one was, is this possible or even a realistic goal? At that point in time the answer seemed to be a resounding no.
The time came for us to continue our quest for the ultimate Shepherd. Enter, Tina Barber the founder of the Original Shiloh Shepherd. My father made contact with her after being attracted to her advertisement and her Christian witness clearly displayed within the advertisement. Tina Barber displayed a level of dedication and knowledge we had yet to see from any breeder. Historically she came from a family of breeders who had a keen working knowledge of the German Shepherd breed. Out of this experience she was able to improve on what most would think accurately was a great breed. In her personal quest to improve on an already remarkable breed, in 1962 she introduced the world to the Shiloh Shepherd.
In the mid eighties she introduced our family to this remarkable breed called, Shiloh Shepherd. Some thirty years later I am convinced that not only is this the best Shepherd one could own but to some like me may be the best breed on the planet. This is the introduction to our Shiloh Story.
